Description

Mahajanga
The second largest port in Madagasikara, is settled at the mouth of the Betsiboka, a river reddened by alluvial deposits. It is known as the “city of flowers” and its origin is entangled in innumerable legends. Indo Arabic influence has left its imprints on the houses built in cube or finely carved doors. The town’s emblem, the  lonely baobab, stands imposingly at a crossroads, and its inhabitants have adopted the daily ritual of lingering at the seaside long after the sun set on the Bay of Bombetoka.

The Mangatsa Sacred Lake
Situated 18 km from town, this tranquil place conserves nature, Sakalava culture and tradition: sacred lakes where large eels and carps swim in a natural aquarium, a place of worship where a sacred tree surrounded by bright or immaculate cloths, Malagasy flag and offerings expressing thankfulness for granted vows are seen. Crocodiles in captivity, white lemurs in the wild, the thousand branches baobab, not forgetting the museum of Philibert TSIRANANA evoking the history of the fathers of Malagasy republic are also found there. Hunting duck in wild and boar are the major attraction of the place.
