Moroni was the capital of the Sultanate of Bambao in the 10th century. It became the capital of the Comoros territory (then French overseas territory) in 1962‚ then became the capital of the Comorian state at independence in 1975. It is the capital and largest city of the Comoros.
The city has a port that connects it to the other islands of the Comorian archipelago‚ as well as Madagascar. It houses a medina that was surrounded by a wall that was destroyed by the French in the nineteenth century following a revolt.
Moroni is a young capital but its history has left several beautiful remains. This former sultanate was created on the edge of a small bay that was transformed into a Dhow Harbour that traded with other sultanates of the Indian Ocean‚ including Zanzibar. This port made Moroni's fortune as a small fishing village.
The Muslim tradition requires that every embryo of an urban area be organized around a mosque‚ which is the case of Moroni‚ thus pleasing its inhabitants as well as visitors.
